Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn is actively encouraging women employees in its Indian operations to undertake leadership roles in design and technology sectors. As articulated by Chairman Young Liu, the company employs a workforce of approximately 48,000 individuals in India, with a notable inclusion of married women constituting 25 percent of new hires.
Chairman Liu stated, “We see not only assembly work for women but also potential for positions in design and technology. Many of our current employees possess advanced educational qualifications, and we wish to enhance their career progression beyond assembly roles.” Foxconn’s facilities demonstrate a significant female presence, comprising 70 percent of the workforce.
In a recent development, Foxconn inaugurated a women-only residential complex in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, constructed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), which can accommodate over 18,000 female employees. Chairman Liu has noted a positive trend in hiring practices, emphasizing that the company recruits individuals based on merit, irrespective of gender.
Additionally, Foxconn is in the process of establishing its second-largest mobile manufacturing plant outside of China in Karnataka, with an investment of ₹25,000 crore aimed at generating 40,000 new job opportunities. Recently, the company allocated approximately ₹1,200 crore to its operations in Karnataka, raising its total investment in Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Pvt Ltd to ₹13,800 crore.
Furthermore, discussions are currently underway with the Tamil Nadu government regarding the establishment of a battery energy storage system unit focused on electric vehicles. The company has also initiated a joint venture to develop a semiconductor plant in India and is preparing to commence electric vehicle production within the country. Chairman Liu noted that the information and communication technology segment of Foxconn is just beginning its operations in India and highlighted the company’s intent to implement its “3+3 strategy,” which prioritizes expansion in critical sectors such as electric vehicles, digital health, and robotics industries.
